Water heating for your farm, your questions answered

We had a great time at both Ploughing Championships and the National Dairy Show. We spoke to thousands (literally) of people over the two events. The chat was great and it was great to hear so many stories of what is going on, on farms around Ireland.

The main attraction on our stand Calor, was our Rinnai water heaters.  We had huge interest in the water heating systems. There were lots of really good questions, so we thought we would compile the most common and put them online for all to see.

What are the main features of the Rinnai water heaters?

Firstly, because they are run on LPG, Rinnai water heaters are very cost effective. Not only because LPG is a very economical fuel, but also because it is so flexible and quick to use. We provide hot water on demand, because you don’t need to constantly heat the water or store the water, running costs are lower. Flexibility means that it is easy and quick to adjust temperatures.

LPG systems can be tailored to meet the needs of your farm. Unlike many others, they can be used indoors or outdoors. The system is modular, so it can also be scaled up or down, depending on your needs.

Because LPG is the cleanest fossil fuel, it means lower emissions for usersand less mess.

Can you have varying temperatures?

Absolutely, Rinnai water heaters are very flexible, which is important for farmers. A digital controller makes it easy to change temperatures at the touch of a button. So, if you need 85 degrees for water heating for your dairy herd, you can have it. If you need to reduce to 42 or 43 degrees for calf replacing, that is simple too.

Is it a big job to install a new system?

No. In most cases there will already be some existing system in place, most likely an electric water heater. For installation, a two-person crew will normally take a day and a half to install the system. However, the down time on the existing system will likely be more than an hour and a half. This can obviously be timed for minimum disruption.

Is there a bulk tank required?

Yes. The water heating system is powered by LPG, which is stored in a bulk tank on site.  The tank can be located away from the heater and there is no issue with a tank being 30 or 40m away. For planning purposes, the tank must be no less than 3 m from the property.

What about deliveries?  Do I have to re-order gas all the time?

No. There is no need to re-order. A digital monitor allows Calor to know when gas is running low and the bulk tank gets topped up automatically.

How big a system do I need for my farm?

The Rinnai water heating system is modular and so can meet the needs of any size of farm. Two heaters, working together, will heat 200 litres of water in ten minutes up to 85 degrees, enough for a herd size of 150 to 180 animals.  A single heating unit would be sufficient to meet the needs of a smaller herd, say 80 cows.

Can they be installed anywhere in the dairy parlour?

Ideally, they will be installed it where your existing pipes are, where your cold and hot feed are located.

I’ve never heard of Calor providing water heaters, is this new.

Calor have been providing heating solutions to Irish homes and businesses for 80 years. More particularly, we have been providing water heaters for over ten years. The technology is a logical extension of the technology we have used in homes, farms and businesses for decades As we have grown more and more popular in the farming sector, demand has grown significantly for our our clean, efficient, cost effective water heaters.
