Energy efficiency advice and tips for your home

  • Did you know that turning up the thermostat on your boiler and turning down the thermostat in your hallway is the best way to maximise your boiler’s energy efficiency? This way, the boiler shuts down when the rooms get to the required temperature, thereby using much less energy, saving you money and still giving you the heat you need to keep your home warm.
  • Turning your room thermostat down by just 1 degree can help you save up to 10% in running costs. According to best practice standards, the living area thermostats should be set to 18-20 degrees, while bedrooms should be set to 15-17 degrees for comfort and maximum energy efficiency.
  • Boilers account for approximately 60% of all domestic CO2 emissions, so choosing a high efficiency boiler will not only save you up to 25% off your heating bill, it will also help reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Cooking with gas not only gives you the benefit of instant controllable heat, it also reduces electricity usage, which is good for the environment.
  • Spot heating with a mobile gas heater is perfect for heating the room you are in as opposed to the whole house, thus saving you money.
  • Reducing or eliminating draughts from external windows and doors can greatly enhance your comfort, reduce energy use and save you money.
  • Remember to still allow adequate ventilation when doing so, especially when using fuel-burning appliances.
  • Buy energy efficient appliances – make sure any appliances you buy have an ‘A’ rating.
  • Be sure to use the timer on your immersion or boiler so that you only heat your home when you need it.
  • Did you know that you can get grants from the SEAI for upgrading to a high efficiency boiler heating system*? In addition to the grant, Calor also offer further incentives when you upgrade your boiler and controls system. For more information, click here.
  • Install thermostatic controls on your heaters.
  • Regular maintenance of your heating system will ensure it runs as efficiently as possible. It is recommended that you have your boiler serviced every year.
  • If you are replacing your hot water cylinder, opt for a factory-insulated cylinder if possible. Otherwise, make sure to fit a lagging jacket and cylinder thermostat to the cylinder to keep water hotter for longer.
